Llegamos hasta los Emiratos Árabes Unidos. Precisamente a Dubai, para conocer la historia de Guillermo Cuitino, de 49 años, manager de Habtoor Polo Resort & Club, un argentino suelto a orillas del Golfo Pérsico. Por Joaquín Etchepare

“Nací en Bella Vista, Provincia de Buenos Aires. Con el polo arranqué cuando era muy chico. En Bella Vista había un club privado familiar muy amateur que tenía una cancha y mi padre tenía algo que ver con este club por lo que fue ahí que comencé. En cuanto a antecedentes polisiticos en la familia no tengo mucho a diferencia de un gran porcentaje del mundo del polo, salvo mi padre que comenzó de grande y jugaba de manera amateur. Gracias a él fue que arranque de chiquito, taqueando en los petisos.”, arranca Guillermo la charla…
Contanos un poco de tu actualidad y cómo llegás a este lugar. Ahora estoy en Dubai. ¡Ya hace 13 años que vengo! Mi actual jefe es Mohammed K Al Habtoor, que conocí gracias a Ryan Pemble, quien me llevara a Dubai luego de haber jugado juntos en Inglaterra. Ahí empezó todo.
Los primeros 9 o 10 años estuve como jugador en Dubai, después cuando me empecé a poner más grande decidí no jugar más en la alta competencia y quedé como coach y manager de HABTOOR. Aunque sigo jugando algún mediano o bajo, hoy el polo en mi vida pasa por otro lado, con otras responsabilidades.
Este club se inició hace aproximadamente unos cinco años, fue un proyecto muy ambicioso de Mohammed quien dejó que yo pueda participar. La iniciativa principal era que el pudiera tener un par de buenas canchas y caballerizas, pero Mohamed arrancó con todo. Los Habtoor son muy importantes en Dubai (Nde, tienen empresas constructoras y demás en EUA) y consiguieron la tierra en un lugar espectacular. Así fue como comenzó un proyecto que hoy es gigante.
El proyecto tiene un hotel que en sus inicios fue de la cadena St. Regis y hoy la consecion esta bajo Al Habtoor Polo Resort, con 175 habitaciones, y al mismo tiempo tiene cuatro canchas de polo de primer nivel, 500 boxes. Realmente soy un agradecido a la vida por haber tenido la suerte de que Mohamed confiara en mí y en parte que me dejara opinar y participar en el proyecto en todo lo referido a la parte del polo. También hubo una persona que me ayudó mucho que fue Adam Snowdon, con quien hicimos el desarrollo de la parte de polo en Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club. Realmente todo esto ha superado mis expectativas, hoy es como un country si lo comparamos con Argentina, resultó ser un éxito ya que tenemos muchos socios, mucha actividad y mucho polo.
¿Cómo es el polo en Dubai?
Si bien en Dubai existe el polo hace muchísimos años, arrancando por Abu Dhabi, con Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club, luego con Ali Albwardy, que le sumó mucho al polo con el equipo de Dubai, yo creo que el que dio el empujón firme y más importante fue Mohammed. Fue el quien le puso más dedicación, ganas y energía a que crezca el polo de la manera que hizo en los últimos doce años con torneos y una visión mucho más ambiciosa en cuanto al nivel y la cantidad de equipos.
Él arranco con un proyecto personal que es el Arabian Ranches que era la Copa de Plata y Copa de Oro en Dubai que no existían, empezamos jugando 12 goles y hoy en día se están jugando 18 goles muy competitivos, con la idea que en el futuro lleguen hasta los 20 goles. Esto realmente fue un éxito teniendo todos los años entre ocho y diez equipos, con los mejores jugadores del mundo. Por acá pasaron Pablo McDonough, Alfredo Capella, Facu Sola, Nico Pieres, Ale Muzzio, Lucas Monteverde, Hugo Barabuchi, Juajo Brane, Nachi Heguy, Pelon Stirling, Gallego Ferreira, Fran Elizalde, Los Castañolas, Ulloa, Torres Zavaleta, Guille Terrera, Taranco, Lucas Diaz Alberdi, entre otros, lo que claramente marca un alto nivel de polo ;extraordinario, muy competitivo. Además, los caballos fueron mejorando todos los años, pero creo que lo que más hay que destacar, que es lo que verdaderamente importa, es lo mucho que creció el polo en Dubai en estos últimos años.
Antes veías un polo más individual, más privado, o estaba con el club de Abu Dhabi que también tenía mucha actividad y canchas, pero el polo se desarrollaba a nivel más privado. Lo que no tenía Dubai era un club con torneos internacionales como los que organizamos hoy con la Copa de Plata y la Copa de Oro, esto es algo que hay que agradecerle a Mohamed: la apertura mundial al polo en Dubai.
¿Cómo está funcionando el club hoy en día?
Hoy en plena pandemia, el club tiene una actividad deportiva diaria, tenemos 8 equipos, hay una escuela de polo que se mueve continuamente, con nuevos patrones, muchos chicos que ya estaban y nuevos que se suman. También tenemos un lote caballos para el rental, para las personas que quieran venir de Europa o de cualquier lugar del mundo a jugar, tenemos torneos de todos los niveles, todos los meses.
Realmente me encanta poder contarlo y que el mundo del polo lo sepa.
¿Cómo se compone una temporada en Dubai?
La temporada de polo en Dubai es la más larga del mundo, arrancamos a jugar en octubre y terminamos a fines de mayo. Creo que en ningún lugar del mundo hay una temporada de polo que dure tanto. En los meses de enero, febrero y marzo jugamos los torneos de 18 goles, la Copa de Plata y Oro, pero en el resto de los meses jugamos torneos de bajo y de mediano handicap. También tenemos torneos para chicos y torneos de mujeres. Tomi Iriarte es actualmente el polo manager, aparte de amigo y es él quien está en cada detalle en lo que se refiere al polo del club.
¿Cómo es un día en la oficina?
En cuanto a mi actividad diaria en el club, arrancamos como creo que lo hace el mundo del polo en general muy temprano con los chicos en la caballeriza tomando mate y haciendo listas en el pizarrón. Charlas con el veterinario y chequeos de los caballos. Lo que no puede faltar es el mate, acá con trabajo de por medio el mate siempre está. También montamos, taqueo práctica o partido. Cada tanto alguno se paga un asado (risas) y algo algún truco. En general el día de pasa rápido al igual que la temporada. Mi trabajo lo hace más fácil el equipo de trabajo que tenemos. Es un grupo muy lindo con chicos argentinos que están en la parte del cuidado de los caballos, a quienes traigo todos los años conmigo. A su vez tenemos un grupo de hindúes que también se ocupan del cuidado de los caballos, es también un grupo muy lindo que tenemos desde el día que empecé hace trece años. Juanji Diaz Alberdi y Nico Isla son los chicos que me ayudan con el tema de las caballerizas. Dos cracks.
También una vez al día paso por la otra caballeriza que es del otro equipo, Wolves, que es el equipo del hijo de Mohammed; HABTOOR AL HABTOOR, este equipo lo maneja mi hijo Justo Cuitino, está a cargo de la caballeriza y hace más o menos lo mismo que yo con otros equipos de trabajo también con varios argentinos.
Los días acá son muy lindos realmente, es un trabajo increíble. Yo vivo en el club, almorzamos siempre con los chicos, tenemos gimnasio, pileta, cancha de tenis, de futbol, es un lugar que está muy bien armado. Vivimos en comunidad, casi como en la casa de Gran Hermano (risas). Los domingos generalmente acá descansamos porque es como lunes, es el día más tranquilo, el fin de semana es viernes y sábado, y el domingo es día laboral en Dubai.
¿Alguna anécdota divertida? Tengo muchas. Pero la más insólita fue en Inglaterra. Yo jugué muchos años ahí y cuidaba en la zona de Ascot, Windsor y hubo un torneo que nos tocó jugar en Cirencester. Yo siempre contrataba un camión para que me lleve los caballos, pero teníamos un pequeño gran problema: la tordilla que pateaba. El dueño del transporte me odiaba, se me quejaba siempre porque le rompía todo el camión. ¡Llegó a decirme que esa yegua en su camión no entraba más! Hasta que conseguimos la solución de que para los viajes la sedábamos para que pueda viajar más tranquila.
Acá viene lo divertido - hoy, en ese momento no (aclara)-. A la vuelta de ese torneo se olvidaron de darle el calmante, y arrancó a patear en medio de la autopista. Vale aclarar que el que manejaba era un inglés muy mala onda. Entonces, venía manejando por la M4 (una autopista muy conocida en Inglaterra) ya siendo ocho y pico de la noche, el tipo frena el camión y me baja a la yegua. Si! En el medio de la autopista. Mi petisero que viajaba con él, un correntino, muy rústico y bien campero, que hablaba poco y nada en inglés y andaba bastante en patas, se había sacado los zapatos en el camión. Asique la situación fue que bajaron a la yegua y el tipo se subió en patas y a pelo y bozal empezó a caminar por la M4, mientras que el camión se iba.
Gracias a dios la historia termina bien: recibí el llamado de un amigo diciendo que acababa de ver a mi petisero en patas, montando en pelo y bozal por la M4 con la tordilla. En ese momento pensé que era una joda, pero por suerte terminó todo bien porque este amigo mío cargo la yegua en su camión y se la llevó a su casa.
Guillermo Cuitiño, the story of an Argentinian in Dubai
We arrived to the United Arab Emirates; to Dubai, precisely, to meet up with 49-years-old Guillermo Cuitiño, Manager at Habtoor Polo Resort & Club, to know the story of an Argentinian in the shores of the Persian Gulf. By Joaquín Etchepare.
Guillermo starts the conversation - "I was born in Bella Vista, in the Province of Buenos Aires. I started to play polo when I was a kid. There was a small, very private, familiar and amateur club there, that had a polo field, and I started to play because my father had quite a relationship with them. With regards to my polo background within the family, there’s no much difference with the average in the polo community. Only that my father started to play polo a bit late, and he was an amateur player. Thanks to him, I was able to start to play polo when I was a child, by doing some stick-and-ball and riding small horses".
Tell us about your current life, and how did you arrive to this place.
Well, I am in Dubai now. I’ve been coming for 13 years now! My boss is Mohammed K. Al Habtoor. I met him through Ryan Pemble, who took me to Dubai after playing together in England. That's how it all started.
I played in Dubai for about 9 or 10 years; later on, I left high competition, so I remained as coach and manager for Habtoor. Although I still play some medium-goal or low-goal tournaments, my life within polo is very different now, with other responsibilities.
The club started around five years ago; it was Mohammed's very ambitious project, and he let me to take part of it. The mail goal was to get a couple of fields and stables for him, but Mohammed wanted something bigger. The Habtoors are very important in Dubai (NR: They own several construction companies in the UAE), and they were able to get the land in a spectacular place. And they started a project, that it is incredibly huge today.
The project includes the Hotel (in its beginnings it was St Regis and then Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club acquired the concession), with 175 rooms; in addition, it has four high level polo grounds, 500 boxes. I am really thankful to life for being so lucky to have Mohammed trust in me and let me be a part of this project, in all concerning to polo. In addition, there’s another person who helped me a lot, Adam Snowdon. Together, we developed the polo facilities at Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club. To say the truth, all this exceded my expectations; this project is like a country in Argentina, very successful as well, because we have several members, and a lot of polo and activities.
How is polo in Dubai?
Despite polo in Dubai was played for several years, it started in Abu Dhabi, with Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club; up next, came Ali Albwardy, who was a crucial piece for the develop of polo in Dubai, through his own Dubai team. But I think it was Mohammed who gave the final push. What he have done is remarkable – he put energy, dedication and his heart and soul to the growth of polo in Dubai during the last twelve years, not only with tournaments but also through a more ambitious view with regards to the level of competition and number of teams.
He started with a personal project, Arabian Polo Ranches, that included the Silver Cup and the Gold Cup, that didn’t exist in Dubai back then. We started playing 12-goal tournaments, and up-to-date we are playing very competitive 18-goal, with the idea to raise to 20-goal in the future. And it is indeeed a huge success, that includes between eight and ten teams playing every year at the highest level; lineups that include some of the stars of the sport, worlwide renowned players such as Pablo MacDonough, Alfredo Cappella, Facu Sola, Nico Pieres, Ale Muzzio, Lucas Monteverde, Hugo Barabucci, Juanjo Brané, Nachi Heguy, Pelon Stirling, Ezequiel Martinez Ferrario, Fran Elizalde, the Castagnolas, Salva Ulloa, Matias Torres Zavaleta, Guille Terrera, Jejo Taranco, Lucas Diaz Alberdi; names that play at the highest level, extraordinary polo and very competitive. In addition, the quality of horses improved every year; but what’s more more remarkable, what is more important, is that polo in Dubai had a very impressive growth in the last years.
Polo in this area was more private, more individual before; it was played in the club in Abu Dhabi, that had a lot of activity and very good fields, but polo was a much more private sport. Dubai didn’t have a club with international tournaments such as those we organise today, the Silver Cup and the Gold Cup. And this is something to be thankful to Mohammed, because he did open Dubai polo to the world.
How does the club work today?
Today, within the current pandemic scenario, the club have sports activity on a daily basis; we have 8 teams, there's a polo school that's always working through new patrons and several kids – those who were already in the school and many more who are coming up. We also have a horse string for the rental, in order to provide those who come from Europe or from any other part of the world to play. We have tournaments of all levels every month.

How is the Dubai season?
Dubai has the longest polo season in the world. We start playing in October and finish in late May. I guess there’s no other polo season in the world that lasts for so long. We play the 18-goal tournaments, the Silver Cup and the Gold Cup, in January, February and March, and the remaining months we have low goal, medium goal, polo for kids and ladies. Tomi Iriarte is the current polo manager as well as a friend, and he is into every detail with regards all things polo of the club.
Can you describe a day at the office?
Well, with regards to my daily activity at the club, we start early in the morning, as everybody in polo does. We meet with the boys in the stables, drink mate, write the horse lists on the blackboard, we speak to the veterinarian, check the horses.
But what it is essential is the mate; we never run out of mate, there’s a lot of mate here while working! We also ride, stick-and-ball, do practices or play games. Every now and then, there’s someone who pays an asado! (laughs) and we play truco. Usually, days go fast, as so does the season.
My team makes my job easier. We put a very nice group together, with Argentine boys who take care of the horses, and who I bring with me every year. At the same time, we have another very nice group of Indian boys, who also take care of the horses, and are here since day one, 13 years ago. Juanji Diaz Alberdi and Nico Isla are very helpful with the stables, they are great.
Once a day I go to the Wolves stables, another team that belongs to Mohammed’s son, Habtoor Al Habtoor. My son, Justo, manages this team, he is in charge of the stables and he does almost the same job as me, together with other group work, alongside many Argentinians.
So, days here are very nice really, it is an incredible job. I live in the club, we have lunch with the boys, we have gym, swimming pool, tennis court, football fields. It is a very nice setup. We live within a community, like the house of Big Brother! (laughs)
We take a rest on Sunday, because in Dubai, Sundays are like Mondays; it is the quietest day, because weekends in Dubai are on Friday and Saturday.
Do you have any funny story to share with us?
I have a lot, but I guess the most unusual of all happened in England. It is funny now, but it was not funny at all back then. I used to play there for several years and took care of my horses in the Ascot area, in Windsor. We were due to play a tournament at Cirencester, and I always hired a truck to take the horses, but we had quite a problem – a dapple-grey mare who kicked all the time. The truck owner hated me, he always complained because the mare broke his truck. He even told me he didn’t want that mare in his truck. One day we found a solution - we had to sedate the mare in order to smooth her.
Back from the tournament, they forgot to give the sedative to the mare, and she sharted to kick the truck in the middle of the motorway. It is worth noting that the the truck driver was a bad-tempered Englishman. So, as he drove on the M4 (NR: a very known motorway in England), at around eight o’clock PM, the guy stopped the truck and he put the mare out of the truck. Yes, in the middle of the motorway! My groom, a very rough, countryside Corrientes-born boy, who didn’t speak English at all, and usually was barefoot, removed his shoes inside the truck. So, after the mare was puto ut of the truck, the guy rode her, barefoot, with no saddle at all in the M4, while the truck dissappeared.
Thank God, this situation had a happy ending; I a call from a friend, telling me he had seen my groom, barefoot, riding a dapple-grey mare with no saddle, in the M4. At that moment, I thought it was a joke. But in the end, my friend put the horse in his truck and took her to his home.
