Algo nuevo está surgiendo al norte de Inglaterra. Un torneo que reúne a todos los clubes norteños jugando durante toda la temporada ida y vuelta, con el sistema Home and Away. Surgido en charlas telefónicas con Prensa Polo, llega la Liga del Norte de Inglaterra (The Northen Polo League), que organizará el polo bajo de la región, que oscila en su nivel entre los 2 y 6 goles de hándicap. Las fechas de juego serán desde 24 de mayo hasta el 15 de septiembre.
El creador, Francisco Stuven Ortelli, también mentor de Bramham Polo Academy, tenía la idea de armar algo grande y que se mueva un poco más de polo en el norte. Desde Prensa Polo le comentamos ciertos parámetros del sistema difundido por el Circuito Polo Sur en la Argentina, que conocemos desde sus primeros días e ideas como el formato de la Copa Anfitriones. Con tiempo, Fran le fue dando forma durante el invierno y el inicio de la agenda de trabajo estuvo marcada principalmente por juntar a los equipos, hablar a la vez con los patrones y los profesionales, incentivarlos, y luego buscar sponsors y tratar que se sume mucha gente y clubes.
¿Qué creés que le aporta esta liga al polo inglés? Aporta más polo, que se sume más gente, que los clubes se muevan entre otros clubes y que empiecen a viajar un poco, acá estamos entre media hora y tres horas de distancia de todos los clubes que jugarán The Northern Polo League. Esto hace que se promueva la actividad en toda la región. Le aportará también al polo inglés gente nueva, eso es lo que hace el bajo hándicap, alimentar todo el tiempo al mediano y el alto. Del bajo salen los patrones del mañana y también jugadores porque hay muchos chicos jugando, cosa que antes no existía en el norte de chicos jugando al polo y ahora hay varios de entre 10 y 15 años que lo están haciendo muy bien.
¿Cómo tomaron los clubes la iniciativa de esta Liga? A todos los clubes les gustó la iniciativa; tenemos cinco equipos en el alto y cinco en el bajo, lo que es muy bueno para ser el primer año. La idea es que siga creciendo en los próximos años.
¿Con qué desafío se encontró al tratar de unificar el polo en una zona? El desafío más grande es que la gente se mueva del club, siempre juegan en el mismo club la misma gente y los mismos equipos todo el tiempo, entonces esto lo que hace es moverlos un poco, algo que acá en el Norte no gusta mucho, ese el mayor desafío.
¿Con qué tipo de evento nos vamos a encontrar cuando empiece a rodar la bocha? La idea es que los partidos sean durante la semana o cuando ambos equipos lo arreglen y que el local agasaje al club visitante. La premisa es hacer un gran after match para que además de polo haya un plan social y todos pasen un buen rato.
¿Cómo proyectarías esta liga en 5 años? Me encantaría que haya 10 equipos en cada nivel, y en un nivel más alto también, que se sumen más sponsors, que la HPA nos de una mano, que se puedan jugar las finales en Guards Polo Club, por ejemplo. Pero eso, ojalá, sucederá con el tiempo.

A Joaquín Etchepare de Prensa Polo, que me dio una mano muy grande en todo esto, a todos los patrones que se animan a jugar esto por primera vez, se arriesgaron bastante y lo hicieron con mucha buena onda. Something new is happening in the north part of England. A new tournament that gathers all of the northern clubs with a Home and Away system. After many phone calls with Prensa Polo, the Northen Polo Leage arrives.It will be a low handicap tournament, handicap will be between 2 and 6 goals. They will have matches from 24th May till 15th September.
The founder, Francisco Stuven Ortelli, also mentor of the Bramham Polo Academy, wanted to organise something big and wanted to have more polo in the northern part of England. From Prensa Polo, we showed him some standards of the system used by Circuito Polo Sur in Argentina, something we knew from the beginning. As the days went by, Fran started to give this some shape during the winter. He started to gather some teams and started to talked with different PATRONES, profesionales and then started to look for some sponsors and clubs.
What do you think this leage gives to the English polo?
This allows people to join the polo world, also the interaction between the clubs. In addition, it permits people to know the different clubs there are here, we are between one and three hours drive tonal of the clubs that will play The Northern Polo League. Also it will give to the English polo new people, that is the interesting thing of the low handicap polo, they feed the medium and high handicap polo. From the low handicap polo we will have the future patrons and also lots of polo players. We now have a lot of kids of 10 to 15 years that play polo, something that years ago you won’t see it in the north part of England.
How the clubs reacted to this new league?
All of the clubs loved the iniciativa. We have 5 teams of the heigh handicap and 5 of the low one, this is really good taking into account is our first year. The idea is that it keeps growing more in the next years.
Which was the most challenging thing you had to go through when you were trying to unify the polo of the north?
The most challenging thing is to make people move from their own club, they always play in the same club, with the same people and between the same team. So this is quite difficult to make people move to other clubs.
Which type of events we are going to find when the tournament starts?
The idea is to have the matches during the week and that the local club invites the other club. We want to make a big after match, in order to have polo and also a social event, and everyone gets to have a nice time.
How will you imagine this leave in five years time?
I would love to have 10 teams of every level, to have more sponsons and to have the support of the HPA. Also I would like to have all the finals in Guards Polo Club. Hope this happens when time goes by. .
